PICK YOUR POISON Altbier is the beer we'd most want to be stranded on an island with, a lesser-known style beginning to receive its dues. Altbier is Kolsch's stylistic spirit animal. Both styles hail from cities in the same region in Germany. Whereas Kolsch is delicate and drinkable, the allure of Altbier is that it manages to be flavor-forward, yet simple and relaxed. Altbier and Kolsch are fermented with the same type of yeast, which contributes lager-like and ale-like yeast flavors in equal measure. The lager component is clean, crisp and bready; the ale part, a subtly accented fruitiness.
My Preferred Apocalypse is an amber beer possessing layers of malt character (Think toasted bread, subtle rye spice, and mild caramel) in a dry, very light package. Pronounced hop character provides a properly bitter, herbaceous, and floral companion to the malt and yeast notes. Ours was brewed with German-grown Cologne Malt, a touch of German Caramalts and roasted malts, and hopped semi-aggressively with German Hersbrucker and German Perle.
